Berat is located in south-western Albania, in a steep canyon on the banks of the Osum River. The Osum River divides the city in two. On both sides of the city, two-storey, all-white, two-storey historical houses, located on the hills, never block each other's sun and views by using the elevation difference. Berat is known as the "City of a thousand windows" because of the rare beauty of these houses with plenty of windows to maximise sunlight and views.
This small settlement, which attracts attention with its historical texture and geographical location, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The first name of the city of Berat, founded in 310 BC, was Antipatrea. Later, under the Romans, it was called Albanorum Oppidum (Fortress of Albanians), while during the Byzantine period it was renamed Pulheriopolis (Beautiful City). In the 9th century, the city came under the rule of the Bulgarian state and would take its last name: Belgrade (meaning: White City)
The city of Berat acquired its present external appearance as a result of intensive construction activities from the 18th century onwards.
Tirana has one airport, Tirana International Airport (Nënë Tereza) - TIA
After landing at Tirana Airport, you can take a bus to Berat city by transferring to the terminal. The terminal is called Terminali i Autobusave të Jugut dhe Veriut (in English: Albania Bus Terminal South and North). The journey takes about three hours. There is a bus every half hour from the city centre (and back to the city centre). Bus services run from 5:40 AM to 17:30 PM. The bus fare is 500LEK (4,5 euro) for one person one way. If you want to use a taxi as an alternative, unfortunately Uber is not used in the city, so you will have to use a classic taxi, the taxi fare is approximately 70-80euro for one person one way. You should have cash with you, credit cards will not be valid for taxis and buses. You can use these sites for taxis. There are several types of taxis with different names, don't get confused, no problem.
This is the current situation for 2023, but if you come across this article a few years later, it is useful to verify this information before you go.
Alternatively, if you want to rent a car, the average price for the most basic car packages is 20-30 EUR per day. If your trip has definite dates, car hire will provide you with the most affordable cost by making a reservation with online payment from companies such as rentalcar. Albania is at the peak of the season in July or August. Therefore, you will most likely pay more for a rental car, as the cheap cars of the most basic/basic models will no longer be available (probably 50-60EUR per day). You should also include the cost of fuel in all this, depending on the distance you will cover. You can check the headline “Is it necessary to rent a car in Berat?” for more details.
Since it has a mild Mediterranean climate, it can be visited in all seasons. But tourists mostly prefer April, May, September and October. We preferred autumn, the weather was rainy some days, but we did not have much difficulty because we had a rental car.
Berat is a small settlement. One day will definitely be enough as the places to visit are within walking distance of each other. If you are going on a day trip, you should set off early in the morning. There are also nice places to stay.
The situation regarding accommodation is actually subject to highly variable situations such as the number of people travelling, age, budget, time interval, rental car and transport options. Nevertheless, I will suggest a few basic locations to give you an idea.
The hotels I will recommend here are usually in the form of mansions. Some are wooden, some are stone mansions. It can be a pleasant experience for those who have not stayed in a mansion before. The interior decor of these places is also decorated with wooden furniture in vintage style.
Master hotel
Wooden roof and the lower floor of the stone with a full authentic looking hotel. The rooms are clean, the staff are friendly, we can say that it is a full family business. The location is close to the castle.
Beratti Castle Hotel
An authentic stone mansion. It is marvellous to be inside the castle. Living inside the castle will be a different experience. Because it is inside the castle, it is located on the hill.parking can be a bit of a problem.it will be difficult to get up and reach the hotel by car. Those who do not come by car may prefer. You can also choose this place in the months when tourists prefer less. The interior of the hotel is decorated in an authentic way, you can see historical items on the ground in the restaurant. A marvellous place with everything.
Hotel Colombo
A more luxurious five-star hotel. It can be an alternative for those who do not want to stay in the mansion. But when you come here, it feels more friendly to stay in the authentic mansions of Berat, but we wanted to recommend it as an alternative.
Maya Hostel
I am writing this hostel for those who will come crowded with friends because they also have bunk rooms. This place offers an intimate beautiful environment. Quiet and peaceful environment. The view overlooking the Osumi river is also worth mentioning. You can participate in the Berat tours event here.
Lorenc Guesthouse&hostel
Another option in Berat mansions. Hostel clean, hostel owners are friendly. This is a beautiful authentic mansion, you can enjoy the view from the terrace.
As an alternative to all these, you can also browse hotels on Booking.com.
If you will only visit the centre of Tirana and then only visit Berat, you do not need a rental car. However, if you are one of those who rent a car in every country you visit like us, then you can rent a car for pick up from Tirana International Airport.
There are all the brands you can think of such as Sixt, Europcar, Hertz, Enterprise, Avis etc. Since we are going to other countries, we preferred Sixt. Sixth is one of the rare companies that allow entry to all Balkan countries with green insurance. Of course, if you will only stay in the same country, you can easily evaluate other companies.
During the rental phase, a certain amount is blocked, which will be returned in about 15 days after the return of the vehicle. You can check current prices on Rentalcars.com or booking.com.
You can click on the link below to get more information about car hire and changing countries with the rented car.

The castle of Berat is a very old building situated on a rocky hill. As you can imagine, it has a beautiful panoramic view of the old town, the river and the surrounding mountains. Within the fortress walls, a village-like settlement called Kala, with many buildings dating back to the 13th century, is still inhabited. There are many Byzantine churches and two Ottoman mosques inside the walls. There are cafes where you can relax and have a meal. In the summer months, souvenirs are sold in the stalls. Those who come by car can go up to the castle. If you are walking, you will get a little tired but it is worth it. Entrance is free of charge. Number 1 on the map
The museum dedicated to Byzantine art in Berat is located in the Church of St Mary. The icons of the 16th century Albanian painter Onurfi and his son are exhibited here. It looks splendid with its Byzantine icons and frescoes on the dome.
The old church of St Mary Dormition has been converted into a two-storey museum. Small but good collection of icons from various periods. Many old church features, including the altar, have been preserved intact.
The museum is open every day except public holidays. Visiting hours are am09:00-pm06:00. It consists of 35 artefacts, some of which were discovered near Berat Castle. Between the 16th and 18th centuries there are many Byzantine artefacts. Price for a single adult is 400LEK. But we recommend using the audio guide. The audio guide in 4 languages: Albanian, German, Italian and English. The price of this service is 500 LEK. Free for children under 12 years old. You will need to allow approximately 60-90 minutes for the visit.
It is also forbidden to take photographs inside. If you try to take a photo, you will definitely be warned by the staff. There is an outside toilet and it is very clean. There are also benches where you can sit and rest in the shade. Number 2 on the map
It is a 16th century Ottoman monument and one of the oldest mosques in Albania. More precisely, it is a ruin of a mosque. This is because the mosque was destroyed during the Ottoman attack on the fortress of Berat to suppress rebellions against the Tanzimat reforms. The mosque was a relatively modest-sized building with a cubic prayer hall and a polygonal minaret. Its location inside the fortress suggests that the mosque served the needs of local administrators and troops garrisoning the fortress. Number 3 on the map
A beautiful old medieval Byzantine church from the Byzantine period, located in the Berat fortress complex. Unfortunately, it has damaged and unprotected frescoes and is in urgent need of restoration. Dating back to the 12th century, it deserves the title of the most photogenic church in Berat, with excellent views of both the city and Mount Tomorri. It is a Unesco World Heritage Site. Although it was probably previously authorised, it has not been entered for a long time. The church has a square plan and a dome. It consists of naos, narthex and altar alcove. Many features of medieval Byzantine architecture were used skilfully. These features together with the pyramidal shape, form and proportions give the church a picturesque appearance. The mosque was built in 1670. It was restored by the Ottomans in 1870 and a clock tower was built next to it. Because of this, it is called Saat Camisi. The clock tower was destroyed in 1967 during the communist dictatorship. The mosque was also demolished and only the minaret remained. After the end of communism, the mosque was renovated. It is 1,3mil (or 2 km) away from the city centre and was built in 1800s by Abdurrahman Pasha, the son of Recep Pasha. It was built in a strategically very important place on the slope of the Şar Mountains overlooking the Kalkandelen plain. It is one of the most robust castles of the Ottoman period, built with double walls on a large flat area on the hill. A 2,6mil (or 4 km) long tunnel, wide and high enough for horse carriages to pass through, was built through the castle to the town and the Prizren road. Two evacuation tunnels were built in the middle of this tunnel. I can say that the mosque inside the castle was destroyed and almost lost. There is also a church inside the castle today. Leshok Monastery, located about eight kilometres from the city centre, is one of the important worship centres of Tetovo. It includes the Church of the Holy Virgin and the church of St Atanasius.
The Church of the Holy Virgin was built in 1326 and is an excellent example of Byzantine style and architectural tradition. The church has three layers of frescoes. The first and lowest layer dates from the time of the first construction, the second and middle layer was added in the 17th century, and the third and highest layer was added in 1879.
The Church of St Athanasius was built in 1924 next to the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the garden of the Lešok Monastery is the tomb of the Bulgarian clergyman Kiril Peychinovich, born in 1770. Number 7 on the map
Located 11 miles (or 18 kilometres) from the city centre of Tetovo, it is one of the best hidden ski paradises in the Balkans, perhaps one of the best ski paradises in Europe, providing fun times for those who enjoy winter sports and you can also benefit from various services such as food and accommodation in Popova.
