Lake Prespa is the second largest lake in Macedonia after Lake Ohrid, with a surface area of 273 km². A fairly large area of Lake Prespa is located between Mount Galicia and Mount Pelister.
This lake is shared by three border neighbouring countries. These are North Macedonia, Albania and Greece. Macedonia has 65% of the total surface area of this lake. The remaining 35% is divided relatively equally by Albania and Greece.
Prespa Lake is a very virgin and undeveloped region compared to Ohrid Lake. There are not many touristic spots to visit around it. For all these reasons, it would not make sense to come only to visit this place.
However, when travelling from Ohrid to Bitola or vice versa from Bitola to Ohrid, it is of course a region that should be visited and seen.
There are already two historical churches worth visiting. If you want to include these two churches in your route, the extra effort will cost a total of 25 miles (or 40km) round trip and a 1 hour car journey. Visiting time there is not included in the calculation.
You can get information about the details of car hire by clicking on the link below.

Alternatively, you can skip these churches and visit Golem Grad, a small islet in Prespa Lake. This is a very small islet, 600 metres long and 350 metres wide.
There are small boat tours to this island, but to reach this island you need to go to Stenje, Konjsko or Dupeni Beach, which is located right next to the Greek border. We have marked all three locations on the map with a black coloured star icon and roughly indicated the journey times and prices. However, please note that the prices may change according to the season and density.
If you are looking for the cheapest boat price to reach Golem Grad island. You need to go to Konjsko region. However, you need to be careful on the way there because the road leading there is completely dirt and relatively rough. Konjsko is just opposite Golem Grad island and is the closest area to that island.
For this organisation, ask the local people in the region you are going to about the boat tour, only one person in each city is already doing boat tours. If there is no weather opposition, they will tell you to come the next day in the morning. If you are lucky and you have visited in the morning, you may be able to do it on the same day.
Lake Prespa
In any case, this activity requires a minimum of 3-4 hours of your time. If the owner is busy or if you have to wait for other customers, this time may be longer. For all these reasons, we gave up this plan. Instead, as I mentioned above, it made more sense for us to visit 2 historical churches at the foot of Pelister Mountain and continue on the road.
We even visited a few more churches on the way but their doors were locked. Therefore, we could only take photos of them from the outside. That's why we didn't share those churches here. Because we didn't want to deal with the requirements such as contacting someone from the village and getting the door opened.
Depending on your preference, you can fulfil one of these two alternative plans or if your time is limited, you can take only lake photos from Prespa Lake and visit Bitola city located on the other side of Pelister Mountain, which can be one of your next destinations.
Or, if you are coming from Bitola, you can include the locations around Lake Ohrid, which is located on the other side of Mount Galicica and is very popular.
Even after visiting the settlements around Lake Ohrid, you should definitely take a look at our Ohrid article and consider adding it to your route.
We have compiled a total of 2 points about Around Lake Prespa the most popular point and we matched these 2 points with titles and numbers on the map. Please see the map below. Orange color was used for places to visit. We have marked the locations of the boat trips to the island of Golem Grad with a black star. At the same time, if you need to stay for a day for the boat trip, we have marked the hotel we are talking about with a black hotel icon.
1) Kurbinovo – St. George Church
2) Slivnica - Monastery of Holy Mother of God
The church of St George, located near the village of Kurbinovo on the slopes of Mount Pelister, is one of the most important historical monuments of Macedonia. The church can be reached by asphalt road. However, it is not preferred by tourists because it is located far from all popular spots. On the other hand, the frescoes in the church are one of the most valuable Byzantine Christian art in the world.
Built in 1191, the church has a single nave architecturally. Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary are depicted in the frescoes inside the church. In the altar apse, the Annunciation composition is depicted. The depiction of the Archangel Gabriel is really impressive and has become the symbol of the church. So much so that this fresco was printed on the 50 Macedonian Dinar banknote. Number 1 on the map

Slivnica Monastery, located near the village of Slivnica, also on the slopes of Pelister Mountain, was built in 1607. The bell tower and the covered porch were built in the 1900s. The church has one of the most important paintings of the post-Byzantine period in Macedonia.
It can be reached by asphalt road. This church, built in the forest, has been added several times in the course of history and its final form has survived to the present day. There are wooden iconostasis and frescoes with throne icons in the church.
Today, there are about twenty pension rooms in the garden of the monastery. Orthodox people come and stay in the pensions during the summer season. There is also a fountain in the garden which is believed to be healing and holy water. Number 2 on the map
