Prilep is located in the northern part of the Pelagonija Valley in Central Macedonia and is the 4th largest city in Macedonia. Pirlepe is a settlement built on the traces of the ancient city of "Styberra". In 1018, the Byzantine Emperor Basil II gave the city the name "Prilapon".
The city has been home to different civilisations throughout history. Therefore, this has increased the cultural and historical richness of the city. The city attracts attention especially with its architectural structures from the Ottoman period. Although it is not considered as a tourist attraction on its own, if you are in Bitola or if you are going to stay on your route, it is a city where you can stop by and take a short break and have a stroll.
Beer Festival, Procka Festival is a city where you can come across many events. For those who like to take authentic and unique photographs in the country you are visiting, I would like to talk a little about the Procka festival.
Procka - (the religious festival of forgiveness) is a cultural tradition that the local people have maintained for a long time. This event, which has preserved the ethno-cultural identity of Prilep today, is still being carried out by the local population living there. Every year in the centre of the city, the performances last for 3 days. The most admired masks made here are awarded. At the same time, all local and foreign photographers are invited to participate in this festival. Because the best photographs taken at this year's "Prochka 2024" carnival will also be awarded.
We didn't come across it when we went, but you can check the date of that year before you go and adjust your route plan and maybe you can witness it. If you get good shots, you can even win first prize. It is held between the end of February and mid-March. For example, for 2023 it starts on 26 February, but in 2024 it starts on 17 March. So the dates change every year. At the bottom of the paragraph, to give you an idea, I have added the image I have taken from the official website of the prilep carnival in the form of a collage.

If you are coming directly from Skopje, you can take a car journey that takes about 2.5 hours. For those who do not want to drive, there are also bus or train transport options. There are 5 train services from Skopje Train Station to Bitola every day. The journey by trains operated by the state-owned "Macedonian Railways (MZ)" takes about 3 hours. If you want to use the train, you can download and check the data I have prepared for you.
Priliep is also 28 miles (or 45km) away from Bitola city on the A3 motorway, which is about 1 hour away. So when you want to see this city, be sure to include Bitola in your route. You can take a look at our Bitola article to get information about Bitola and decide whether to include it in your route.
The first 5 locations are in the centre and the next 6 are in the area called "Varosh". The distance between the two areas is about 5 minutes by car or 30 minutes on foot. There are many preserved churches in the Varosh area of Prilep. We will also recommend 2 locations outside this settlement, where you can go by private car. The location we have coded as "12" is 30 minutes from the centre of Prilep by car and the location we have marked as "13" is 60 minutes from the centre of Prilep. In summary, these two locations are the locations you should visit on the way from Prilepe to Barbaros, on the highway named "R1303" or on the way to Prilep. It will make your trip plan more efficient if you evaluate them on the way instead of going there from the centre.

It was built by the famous masons Costa Lauco and Riste Taslamiche. In the churchyard is the tomb of the Macedonian revolutionary Pere Toshev. It has excellent frescoes and iconostasis. The iconostasis contains floral and animalistic motifs. It is the work of Dimitrie Stanishev, son-in-law of the famous Macedonian carver Petre Filipovski-Garkata. Alexander III of Macedonia, better known as Alexander the Great. His father was Philip II, King of Macedonia. By the time he succeeded his father and was in his thirties, he had created one of the greatest empires in history, stretching from Greece to north-west India. Church of St. Nicholas
The church of St. Nikola is located in the Varos area in Prilep, near the "Church of Holy Mother of God". This church is a Byzantine monument. It was built in the second half of the XII century on the ruins of the old Slavic settlement. St Nicholas is a simple single-nave church with a semicircular arched vault, with a three-sided apse on the outside. The beautiful frescoes from 1299 are relatively well preserved. In the lower area the figures of saints and warriors are painted in full size. In the second area there are compositions depicting scenes of Christ's sufferings, and in the third area the great feasts. Above the arch, the figures of prophets are depicted in full size. In the upper half of the church, the single nave church of St Mary, which is used only in two rows, has a special place. Unlike the other nave churches, this church is higher and has a semicircular apse inside and outside. According to the literature, the church was built in the XV century (1416 or 1438) by Theodore's sons Paul and Radoslav. Number 7 on the map
In its present form, it has a cross-planned church architecture with a twelve-sided pulley dome, with the south wing lower than the others. Decorative architectural elements are characteristic of XIIIth and XIVth century buildings. Although the exact date of its construction is unknown, it was found in the records of 1335. Among the old furniture preserved are the carved church doors of the iconostasis dating from the end of the XVth century or the beginning of the XVIth century. As a result of the wrong methods used to maintain the frescoes during the Yugoslav Government, the frescoes have become worse than before. Number 8 on the map
We can say that it is a church that has partially survived to the present day. However, since it is close to other churches in Varos, you may want to take photos. Number 9 on the map
Built in 1341 over a basilica, this monastery was used as a centre for Slavic literacy in the medieval period. The frescoes were completed in 1348 and in 1357 King Stefan Dushan of Serbia appointed the monastery as the centre of the newly established Diocese of Zletovo. You have the opportunity to reach the monastery by car. It is forbidden to take photos inside. The monastery still has an active monk life today. Number 10 on the map

Treskavec Monastery (St. Bogorodica Monastery)
Treskavec Monastery (St. Bogorodica Monastery)
It is a monastery located on the rocky Zlatovrv Mountain, 8 km north of Prilep, in northern Macedonia. This monastery has been a place of religious significance for over 3,000 years, even before the Christian era. It was first founded as a temple to Apollo and later converted into a Christian church.
The chapel of this monastery has unique frescoes. In particular, my personal favourite is the fresco of the dome, which depicts the Divine Council with extraordinary clarity.
Treskavec Monastery is a major attraction for visitors due to its historical, architectural and artistic value. In addition, being surrounded by natural beauties offers a marvellous experience for those who visit the monastery. The monastery is reached by a mountain path through rocks and grass and is a great incentive for tourists and mountaineers. Number 12 on the map
This monastery, which was originally spread over an area of 7,000 m2 and most of which has not survived to the present day, is located on the slopes of Dautitsa, in the forest surrounded by oak trees. It is about 19 kilometres (30 km) from Pirlepe. The frescoes date from the 14th to the 16th century.

There is a free car park across the street and the food is delicious. You can try Casserole or House Special Širden, Macedonian Salad, Mixed Grill Platter. A problem with all Macedonian restaurants is that smoking is allowed indoors. There is a non-smoking area here. Since there is no physical barrier between the two sections, you can smell the smell of cigarettes in between, but even the separation of this area for non-smokers is a nice thought. Number 1 on the map
This authentic place, decorated in local style, also has live music performance in the evenings when there are group dinners. It is the most suitable place in Prilep for the opportunity to try Macedonian local dishes and rakija. The staff speaks good English. Prices are reasonable. Number 2 on the map
Prilep is one of the places you can choose for pizza or fast brunch. It is a cafe that will do your job when you go without great expectations. Number 3 on the map
